Labuan Island

The Federal Territory of Labuan is located off the northwest coast of Brunei about 115 km south of Kota Kinabalu. The territory consits of six peripheral islands of Kuraman, Daat, Papan, Rusukan Kecil, Rusukan Besar and Burung surrounding the main Labuan island with a total land area about half the size of Penang. The climate of Labuan is tropical and remains the same all year round. From the earliest times, Labuan has always been a port of refuge for Chinese traders and Arab merchants plying the South China Sea. In 1963, Labuan together with Sabah and Sarawak joined Malaysia and in 1984, was proclaimed a Federal Territory. It was declared an International Offshore Financial Centre in 1990.
