Genting Highlands

Name

Genting Highlands, often referred to simply as “Genting”, derives its name from the Bahasa Malaysia word “Genting” which means “peak”. Established in the 1960s, it stands as a prominent hill resort in Malaysia, renowned for its entertainment, gaming, and cool climate.

Geography

Located in the Titiwangsa Mountains, Genting Highlands sits at an average elevation of 1,740 meters. It is part of the state of Pahang, but it’s closely accessible from the capital city of Kuala Lumpur, being only about 58 kilometers to the northeast. The resort offers panoramic views of the rainforest covered highlands and even distant views of Kuala Lumpur on clear days.

History

Genting Highlands was the brainchild of Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong, a visionary entrepreneur. He foresaw the potential of a hill resort near the fast-developing Kuala Lumpur. Construction began in the early 1960s and by 1971, the first hotel along with the casino was inaugurated. Since then, Genting Highlands has evolved and expanded, becoming a major tourist destination in Southeast Asia.
